Working with Rabbits at the Shelter

Volunteers at the shelter who work with the rabbits follow the these procedures once a day, EVERY day:

1. Wash the water container and refill with tepid (not ice cold) water.

2. Check their Timothy and Alfalfa (hay) and refill as necessary from the blue bin.

3. Check the pellet dishes.  Clean and dry and refill as necessary.  There should be 1/4 cup of pellets in each dish.  DO NOT OVERFEED!

4. Fill their greens bowl (from the refrigerator).  We feed our rabbits escarole, romaine, endive, kale, turnip greens and small amounts of fruit such as apple, pear or grapes and, of course, carrots. (NO ICEBERG OR HEAD LETTUCE)

5. Clean cages.

6. Wash trays with bleach and cold water as necessary.

7. Lay fresh newspapers putting the heaviest coverage in their potty area.

8. Clean up the floor around the cages.

9. TLC and human interaction with the bunnies is very important too!
