Hi, I'm Frankie - my mom's "little" sweetie.   I came into her life on Mother's Day  a few years ago. I was stuck under a  house and crying from under the dirt and my daughter and mother-in-law dug until out I popped I don't remember what happened to birth  mother.  I was about 3 weeks old and VERY hungry.   Some kindly volunteers at the shelter  fostered me  in their homes so I could get the every three hour feedings.  .  Once I gained enough weight (two pounds) I went to my forever home and my mommy says, into her heart.  She was a first time cat owner who was always a dog specialist at the shelter.  I am almost 3 years old now and I weigh 18 pounds.  I live with my buddy Gia, a frisky pup.  We like to run around and "hair up the house" as my dad calls it!  I am a good kitty (according to what I hear, constantly).  This must be because I always go in my litter box and I have never scratched anybody with my claws.  I hope  that anybody out there who finds stray kittens who are clearly abandoned like I was, will read this wonderful brochure created by a former volunteer from the Shelter.  If you do, I am sure your kitten will grow up to be a great cat like ME!

Love,

Frankie

I hope by sharing what I have learned I can make your experience with your newly adopted kitten as life-enriching an experience as mine has been. Some of you have asked what you should do to prepare for the arrival of your new kitten.  I have pictured here 3 elements I consider essential to keeping my kitten happy.    They also like to play with the removable rim from milk jugs.  You can also buy little fluff-balls and various other toys (there must be at least a dozen in this house SOMEWHERE).  The toy on the sturdy string is also attached to a stick.  When he was younger he loved to chase it around and now, this somewhat lazy owner attached it to the chair and he goes CRAZY batting it around and making Maine Coon chirps while he is doing it!  The third and most loved item is Frankie's SISAL scratching post.  He has two from the store and one I made by hot-gluing sisal I bought at Lowe's to the toilet pole.  The secret here folks is getting one that is sturdy and won't tip.   Cats love to scratch a stationary object and they love the feel of SISAL.  I am TOTALLY against declawing and I have not had any problems with Frankie scratching anything else.  In fact, I have started all the kittens scratching on the carpet squares (turned backwards) that I installed on their cage.  They are getting very good at it already at almost 5 weeks.  I also recommend a litter box that's cheap because they may grow out of it.  CLAY litter because some kittens eat the litter and any other kind might be fatal.  The kittens are using the litter box in their cage (see pictures) and very active.  They are also eating their supplemental foods twice a day.  This week the menu is baby cereal and KMR. Next week we will add some baby beef and chicken to the mix and the week after that they will start eating kitten chow which has been soaked to the consistency of wet, blown-up Cheerios!  The supplemental feeding is provided so they will learn to appreciate different textures and foods and not become finicky eaters when they are grown.  .

And now I would direct you to some links from this web site, re-created below for your convenience.  Even if you are an experienced cat owner there are things to consider you may not be aware of, especially if you plan on de-clawing your kitten or introducing it to another pet.  If there are any questions I haven't covered, please feel free to contact me.
