About the Parma Animal Shelter

The Parma Animal Shelter, Inc. (“PAS”) has been organized for the purpose of staffing the City of Parma Animal Shelter with volunteers, paying certain expenses of operating the Shelter, and generally promoting the following objectives:

  1. Work to prevent animal cruelty, abuse, and neglect.
  2. Educate the public on the importance of spaying/neutering to control pet over-population.
  3. Increase public awareness and appreciation of companion animals.
  4. Assist in providing a stress-free, healthy environment for lost, abandoned, neglected, and stray animals.
  5. To provide emergency and wellness medical care for PAS, Inc. animals.
  6. To find permanent placement into new homes.

OUR MAIN MISSION:

To reconcile lost pets with their owners and find good homes for stray animals brought in by the Parma Animal Warden.

OUR OPERATION:

The Parma Animal Shelter is run by volunteers for the stray and abandoned animals of the City of Parma. Volunteers dedicate their time to tasks such as walking the dogs, cleaning cages for the dogs and cats, feeding the animals, and giving them love. We also have volunteers that foster some of our animals in their home.

Volunteers cannot accept dropped off pets.

Patrons looking for new homes can put their pet's pictures on our Patron's Pets for Adoption page.

The Shelter uses foster care for some animals and is always looking for foster homes and volunteers to work at the shelter. You must be a volunteer in order to foster. You must be 18 or over to volunteer to handle animals. Jr. Volunteers must be 14. See our volunteers page for information on volunteering.

OUR ADOPTION FEES OF $75 INCLUDE:

Dogs receive: 1 year rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, Bordetella vaccine, Heartworm test and 1st heartworm pill, they are also checked for worms. We take them to the Vet of our choice for spay/neuter.

Kittens receive: Kittens are tested for Felv/FIV and wormed at least once and given their 1st of 3 required kitten shots (the other 2 shots and the second worming are on the new owner). The shot is for FVRCP. They are also given a certificate for a FREE spay or neuter and a rabies vaccination (good for 3 years) when the kitten is of age for altering (usually 6 months). The male kittens go to Dr. Clark at Suburban and the females to Dr. Hart in North Royalton.

Cats receive: Cats are tested for Felv/FIV and given their vaccinations for FVRCP (they are not due again until the following year- this is on the owner). 100% of the males are neutered before leaving the shelter and about 99.8% of females. It is only under VERY SPECIAL circumstances that we let an unspayed female leave, and even so, she usually has an appointment set up for a spay within 3 weeks of release, all the new owner has to do is take her there. They also get a rabies vaccination (good for 3 years) at time of spay/neuter.

The Adoption interview involves all members of the household. Pets cannot be adopted as gifts or surprises for another person.
